SAATEN-UNION Biotec: Planting plants at W. von Borries-Eckendorf
Breeding begins with the production of tens of thousands of genetically different plants in the laboratory. All plants shown in the film are varieties with different levels of productivity, which are produced in the laboratory and then grown under natural conditions as shown here. We want to know what performance they deliver and how they react to stress factors such as frost, heat, drought, diseases and pests. Only the high-performance varieties are harvested a year later. With each harvest, the number of varieties decreases and the amount of seeds that we can use to test and propagate the individual varieties increases. Years ago, each variety of today was one of the many plants that started their way in the breeding process as shown here.
